  B: Yes, I see. Haven’t we replied to it?
  A: No, and as I said in the letter, we need it urgently.
  B: Right, I’m sorry. I don’t know why this has happened. I’ll get back to you this afternoon.

  A: I’m phoning a bout the job advertised in The Times for the post of Office Manager.
  B: Yes, have you put your application in writing?
  A: Yes, I sent in my application two weeks ago.
  B: Fine, then you’ll be hearing from us in the near future.
  A: I realize that. I just wanted to let you know my availability.
  B: Right, go ahead.
  A: Well, I can start the job from the beginning of April.
  B: Right, I’ll make a note of that but can you put it in writing?
  A: Yes, of course. I’ll get a letter in the post today.

  A: You know that hotel you recommended in your last letter?
  B: Yes, you mean the one in Southern Italy?
  A: Right. Well I’ve lost the letter and I wanted to book in for a couple of weeks this summer.
  B: Just a moment, I’ll see if I can find the address… I’m sorry I can’t find it.
  A: Doesn’t matter. Could you drop me a line?
  B: Of course. I’ll do that later this week.
  A: Great. Nice talking to you. Bye.

  2. Presentation
  Business letters typically contain the following features (although they may not all appear in the same letter):
  # opening and closing greetings
  # stating the reference at the beginning of the letter
  # requesting
  # explaining the reason for writing
  # thanking
  # enclosing documents
  # apologizing
  # expressing urgency
  # confirming
  # ending the letter
  Here is some of the language typical of business letters.
  2.1 Opening and closing greetings
  If you don’t have a contact name:

  * above-mentioned 上述的,信中已提到的[也可以写成mentioned above,此时无连字符且应放在被修饰词之后]
  通常用在商业书信及讲话中。

  如果你们能寄给稳操胜券所提合同的估价,我方将不胜感激。
  The product mentioned above is available in the major department sores throughout this city.
  上述产品在本市各大百货商店都能买到。
  * attach 加上(条件等),附上……
  attach …to … 将……附在……上[to为介词]
  eg. details of the contract are attached.
  随信附上合同的具体内容。
  We should attach great importance to sales promotion.

  * due 到期的,应当的
  eg. The bill of exchange is due on the first of this month.
  这张汇票本月1号到期。
  Be due to 由于,因为[to为介词]
  eg. The delay of supply is due to shortage of raw materials.
  延期供货是由于原材料短缺。
  The work is due to start in November.

  工作预定在11月开始。
  * appreciate 感激
  eg. We would appreciate a reply at your earliest convenience.
  如果你能尽早回信,我方将不胜感激。
  * post 职位;邮件
  eg. He has got the post of office manager.
  他得到了办公室经理的职位。
  I’ll get a letter in the post today.
  我今天就寄封信。
  * availability 可以应聘上任的状态, available [可得到的]的名词形式
  eg. I’m writing to inform you of my availability for the above post.
  我写信是想告诉你我什么时候能来就任该职。
  The availability of supplies is assured.
  供货是有保证的。
  available 可得到的
  eg. I’m always available if you need a hand.
  如果需要,我随时可以帮忙。
  I’m sorry, the manager is not available at the moment.
  对不起,经理这会儿不在。
  * reply 回答,答复
  reply 为不及物动词时,要带宾语后面必须有介词 to;而answer 及物动词,可直接带宾语。
  eg. He gave me no chance to answer/reply to his question in the last interview.
  上次面试时,他不给我机会回答问题。

  eg. I’m looking forward to your early reply.
  盼早日复信。[常用于信的结束部分]
  * urgently 紧急地
  eg. We need a technician urgently.

  * get back to sb. 给某人回电话
  此短语与call back同义
  eg. please ask him to get back to me as soon as possible.
  请让他尽快给我回电话。
  * advertise 做广告
  eg. We will advertise for our new dish washer next week.
  我们将在下周给新型洗碗机做广告。

  eg. Advertisement is a key means of sales promotion.
  广告是促销的一个重要手段。
  * application 申请
  eg. Have you put your application in writing?
  你写书面申请了吗?
  apply 申请

  * recommend 推荐

  * further to … 继……之后[常用在正式的商务信函的开头表示所谈主题、话题的继续]

  Further to our letter of February 5th, we can now confirm that all the goods you required are available.
  继我方2月5日去函之后,现确认贵方要的货物可心供给。
  * accommodation 膳宿,接待
  eg. accommodations at a hotel 旅馆设备

  * cancel 取消
  eg. The order was cancelled.
  订单取消了。
  * take place 发生[=happen],为不及物动词性词组
  eg. The annual conference will be taking place at the Metropole Hotel from 24 to 28 July.
  年会将于7月24日至28日在蒙特普利饭店举行。
  * enclose 附上,封入
  eg. We enclose details of the conference in this letter.
  随信附上了会议的具体安排。
  enclosure 附件
  * provisional 临时的,暂时的
  * programme 时间表,会议的日程,节目单
  * grateful 感激的
  eg. We world be very grateful if…

  * with reference to …现提及……[常用于商务书信中以担及来信 、参考性资料等]
  eg. With reference to your letter of 25 May, I’m pleased to accept your invitation.

  根据提示写一封英文询价信,注意英文书信的基本格式。
  珍妮·弗尔兹[Jenny Fields]女士是位中间商。她与一位客户签了一份合同,客户要求订购50万吨小麦。她立即给供货商T·斯蒂文[T·Steven]写了一封信,进行询价。写信日期为1997年3月20日,地址为Rich Grain Co.,Beijing, China.信的内容为要求报价,并附上准备签的合同草案。因要求8月份供货,希望能早日签复。
